Today Fall music guide #1 pick...!!!
Finding
hidden treasures fall music harvest:
In a medium with thousands of albums released and billions of downloads
and file-sharing transactions, it's easy for good music to slip under
the radar. It's especially likely during the fall, when labels pull out
the big guns (Madonna, Santana, Kenny Chesney).
So, in addition to a list of the big-gun releases, our critics each chose
three albums they passionately believe should not go unnoticed.
Edna Gundersen's picks:
Carmen Rizzo, The Lost Art of the Idle Moment, Sept. 27
You may never have heard of producer/engineer/remixer/musician Rizzo,
but chances are you've heard his work. The sonic savant has served an
eclectic array of artists, from Pete Townshend to Alanis Morissette, Seal
to Coldplay.
With a little help from guest vocalists such as Esthero, Grant Lee Phillips
and the Digable Planets' Ladybug Mecca, Rizzo crafts ambient pop that's
entrancing and intriguing. The sinuous, dreamy landscapes painted on Travel
in Time, As the Day Breaks and others provide a nifty soundtrack for any
activity, or non-e at all. |

"Get
to know Carmen Rizzo. The studio wiz has been tweaking knobs and cursors
for years for the likes of Seal, Alanis Morisette, Coldplay, Paul Oakenfold,
and the Who’s Pete Townsend. He can also be credited for lobbying
the Grammy organization to introduce a dance music category (the same
year it dropped out of the mercury prize in the UK). His debut, The Lost
Art Of The Idle Moment (Fuel 2000) is a patchwork of styles and influences
made cohesive under a fine tuned production. Rizzo dodges any clichés
and crafts themes with a definitive cinematic approach, meticulously layering
elements, inviting the listener into a colorful panorama. The story unfolds
as guest vocalist Esthero, Jem(still a one trick pony), Kate Havnevik
(who can be also heard musing on Royksopp’s albums) and Ladybug
Mecca lend their unique styling to each track. Leaving the Cineplex for
the art house, it’s inspiring to see an artist not trying to make
a splash, but rather leave a lasting impression." |
